CLEAN Beauty Collective. Recovering search after a Google update.

CLEAN Beauty Collective sells clean fragrances online across the US, from the original CLEAN line launched in 2003 to the CLEAN Reserve collection. After a Google update, the store lost rankings it had held for years. We started on 1 March 2026 to find out why and win those positions back.

The starting point.

The drop didn't hit every page equally. Product pages held up better than the collection pages, and the scent-family collections lost the most. These were the pages built to rank for searches like "fresh clean perfume", yet most of them were little more than a grid of bottles.

01 · Diagnosis

Finding out what changed. Page by page, query by query.

We compared Search Console data from before and after the update and matched every lost query to the page that used to rank for it. The pattern was clear. Collection pages with almost no text had lost to competitors who explained what a scent family actually smells like.

02 · Scent-family collections

Collection pages people can actually read. Starting with Crisp & Clean.

Fragrance shoppers rarely search for a product name. They search for a feeling: perfume that smells like fresh laundry, a light scent for the office, something soapy and clean. We rebuilt the scent-family collections around those searches. Each one now explains its notes, says who it suits, shows how to layer it, and answers the questions shoppers ask before buying. The products stay at the top of the page, where they belong.

03 · Technical SEO

Cleaning up what held the store back. Mostly invisible to customers.

We consolidated overlapping collections, cleaned up indexing, and strengthened the links between collections, products, and guides like the layering page. None of it changes how the store looks. It changes which pages Google treats as the important ones.

04 · Product schema

Structured data on every product. So search engines know what's for sale.

Every product carries structured data for price, availability, and size, kept in sync with the shop. Google can show richer results, and AI assistants get accurate facts when someone asks them to recommend a clean fragrance.

05 · Results

Where things stand. Measured in Search Console.

Rankings started recovering in August 2026, led by the scent-family collections we rebuilt first. Organic traffic has grown month over month since then. Full figures stay with the client, but we're happy to walk through the data on a call.

Client review
A Google update cost us rankings we'd had for years. Matrixe Zone worked out which pages had lost ground and why, then rebuilt our collection pages and fixed the technical side without pulling our team into it. Our traffic is growing again, and we finally understand what our SEO is doing.
